Where the north gives you bushveld and Big Five, the Cape gives you a mountain rising straight out of a city, a peninsula of beaches and fishing harbours, penguins at Boulders, and some of the oldest wine estates in the southern hemisphere an hour inland.
A typical Western Cape itinerary takes in Table Mountain by cable car, the Company's Garden and Bo-Kaap in the city, a full peninsula day to Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point and Boulders Beach, and a day through Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in the winelands. Robben Island, whale watching in season and the Cape Winelands hot-air balloons can all be added.
